Biography
Zvi Friedland was born in 1898 in the town of Malin, Kiev province. As a boy, he and his friends organized amateur theatrical performances. Despite the craving for the theater, Zvi entered the military academy, but because of the 1917 revolution, it was disbanded [3] . In 1920 , as an actor of a drama troupe in Hebrew in Kharkov , he was invited by Yevgeny Vakhtangov to Moscow, where the Jewish theater “Habima” was created at that time. The theater began touring in Europe and the USA. After the theater troupe moved from the USSR to Mandatory Palestine , Friedland became one of the founders and main actors of Habima in Tel Aviv.
For many years, the main performance of the theater remained the legendary Dibbuk (Ha-Dibbuk), which was first staged by Vakhtangov, but which lay on Friedland's shoulders after the theater moved. For nearly 40 years, Zvi Friedland was responsible for maintaining the “Ha-Dibbuk” production in a form as close as possible to the original one. He decided which actors it was time to replace and by whom, and was also responsible for restoring the performance after the breaks, when the performance had already left the permanent repertoire [3] (see Elena Tartakovskaya ’s article “DIBUK, GO! - I WILL NOT LEAVE!” Https: // lechaim .ru / ARHIV / 178 / tart.htm .)
The author of productions on Broadway [4] . In addition to acting and directing, he also taught acting in the studio he created at the Habima Theater, and also taught at the Herzliya High School in Tel Aviv. He died of cancer in 1967 in Tel Aviv, during the farewell ceremony, the coffin was placed on the stage of his native theater.
