Story
The couple Fred and Kate live separately for two months due to the fact that Fred is sick with alcoholism and cannot control the outbreaks of his aggression. Fred is annoyed by the narrowness of the room in which Kate lives with three children, the noise and squalor of this dwelling. The couple receives little financial support from the hostess of the room, the extremely religious Mrs. Franke, who has excellent relations with the local clergy, who formally perform all church rituals, but in their lives turn out to be callous and insensitive to their neighbors. The novel begins on Saturday, September 30 and ends two days later. The main storyline is the preparation for the meeting between Fred and Kate and the meeting itself, which pushes Kate, who is pregnant with the fourth child, to the decision to end the relationship. However, the occasional “collision” on the street opens Fred’s eyes and forces him to return to the apartment and family.
