Zhuravets is a form-forming curvilinear element of the skeleton of the church chapter ( dome ).
It has a complex curved shape. The traditional material for the manufacture of wood. With the development of metal mining and processing technologies, crates of forged elements began to appear.
The number of cranes installed in one dome is always even (at least six). As a rule, it is a multiple of four, since it is easiest to assemble the finished elements together, exposing each subsequent one between the two already installed: 2 + 2 = 4 + 4 = 8 + 8 = 16, etc. An odd number of cranes for making the dome is not used because it violates the principle of symmetry of the bulbous shape.
Cranes assembled and fastened together determine the profile of the dome, as well as its “roundness". The latter directly depends on the number of installed cranes.
The complex, curving shape of the crane practically does not allow it to be made from a single piece of wood. For the manufacture of used typesetted parts that are connected in two layers, overlapping one another.
