History

The Albiguian Crusade , which began in 1209, was led by the son of Simon de Montfort , Senor de Montfort-l'Amoury - Simon IV de Montfort , 5th Earl of Leicester . During the entire conflict, Simon was accompanied by his younger brother Hugo de Montfort .

In 1213, Simon IV and Hugo defeated the combined army of Pedro II , King of Aragon and Raimund VI , Count of Toulouse , at the Battle of Muir , after which Simon IV de Montfort received the county of Toulouse , as well as the Viscountry of Beziers , Albi and Carcassonne , while his brother Hugo received the lords of Castres and de Firth-Ale in the county of Albi , thus becoming a vassal of his brother Simon.

On January 31, 1228, Hugo de Montfort died at the Battle of Varya , and the lord passed to his son Philip I. In 1239 he went to Palestine , where he received the seigneur Tire in flax. There he was killed on August 12, 1270 . His eldest son, Philip II, inherited his father’s possessions in Toulouse in 1239, and the other sons became lords of Tire. September 24, 1270, Philip II died in Tunisia during the eighth crusade .

The son of Philip II, Jean , who inherited Castres after the death of his father, mainly lived in the Kingdom of Naples , where he inherited the title of Count Squilacce after the uncle’s death. However, he did not leave children and after his death in 1300, Castres inherited Eleanor de Montfort , who married Count Vandom Jean V.

In 1338, Castres was inherited by the son of Eleanor and Jean V Bouchard VI , who, after the death of his father in 1315, bore the title of Count Vendome. From that moment, Castres teamed up with County Wand for a while.

In 1356, the King of France, John II the Good, raised Castres to the status of a county.
