Story

Two participants, called applicants, compete in physical contests for strength, dexterity and endurance, similar in type to extreme sports. In every competition, except for the final one, gladiators confront the applicants. The number of contests ranged from 4 to 7 (in this series there were 6, including the final one). Gladiators are neutral participants in the show and their goal is only to give applicants to score as few points as possible. For the victory in the show, applicants compete only among themselves. Applicants were usually relatively unprepared, ordinary people, while gladiators were often professional athletes. Male gladiators opposed male applicants, and female gladiators opposed female applicants. In the last competition ("Eliminator"), the applicants fought among themselves for the victory, but the gladiators did not take part.

In each competition, the applicant received a certain amount of points based on the results. Usually it was 0 in the case of a complete victory of the gladiator over the applicant, 10 in the case of the complete victory of the applicant over the gladiator (and, in some joint competitions, over the opponent, too) and 5 in the event of a partial or partial success of the applicant (and, in some joint competitions, in case of victory over the gladiator, but defeat from another applicant). But there were contests in which points were given to applicants for each local success (for example, an abandoned ball). Then the maximum possible number of points was limited only by the time of the competition. The duration of the contests ranged from 30 to 60 seconds, but some of them could be completed ahead of schedule. The last competition determined the winner, and the initial conditions of the last competition determined the difference in points scored by applicants in the first five.

Brief descriptions of the contests used during this series

The Wall - Applicants are required to climb an impromptu rock. 8 seconds after the start of the applicants, the gladiators start. The first candidate to pick up 10 points. the second - 5 points. If the gladiator catches up with the applicant and throws him off the cliff, the applicant does not gain points.

Duel - The challenger and the gladiator are on small round platforms raised up and slightly apart from each other and at the signal of the judge begin to beat each other with clappers. The one who falls loses. Duration is 30 seconds. If no one was able to bring down his opponent, a draw is declared. For a victory, the applicant receives 10 points, and for a draw 5.

Pursuit - Challengers and gladiators run through an obstacle course. The task of the applicant is to run away from the gladiator and get ahead of the opponent. The task of the gladiator is to catch up with the applicant, whom he is chasing. The first finisher receives 10 points, the second - 5 points.

Pyramid - A game similar to King of the Hill. A large pyramidal construction of mats is being constructed. The task of the applicant is to climb to the top and click on the button located there. The task of the gladiator is to prevent the applicant from climbing there within 60 seconds. Points are awarded according to the same principle as in the "Wall" and "Chase" contests.

Gauntlet - The challenger’s task is to run along a corridor about 45 meters long and about 4 meters wide. The corridor is divided into 5 equal sections, in each of which there is a gladiator trying not to let the applicant pass further or push him beyond the width of the corridor. The gladiators have a clapper or two blocks in their hands, gladiators have the right to block the way for applicants using only their equipment. If the applicant passes all five gladiators in 30 seconds, he scores 5 points. If it goes within 20 seconds, then 10 points.

Suspension Bridge - Two platforms (on one - the applicant, on the second - the gladiator) are connected by a very uncomfortable suspension bridge. The challenger’s task is to cross the bridge to the gladiator’s platform. The task of the gladiator is not to miss the applicant. Each has in its hands beater, with which you can throw the enemy off the bridge. If the player manages to complete his task, he will score 10 points. Duration - 60 seconds.

Hang Tough - In this contest, the applicant had to move from his platform to the side of the gladiator, but here it was possible to move, clutching his hands on the rings suspended from the ceiling on long ropes. The task of the gladiator is to get on the rings to the applicant and throw him down. If the applicant has reached the gladiator's platform, he receives 10 points. If the applicant walks at least half the way (goes to the marked painted rings or further) and remains hanging after 60 seconds, and the gladiator fails to drop him, the applicant will receive 5 points.

Pole-Ax - The challenger and the gladiator simultaneously begin to climb onto cylinders about 10-12 meters high and about 1 meter in diameter along small protrusions protruding from the side surface to the outside. The task of both is to climb up as fast as possible and press the button. Pressing the button activates a mechanism that removes the protrusions on the other cylinder and the opponent falls. The victory of the applicant brings him 10 points.

Joust - The competition is identical to the "Duel" competition with the only difference being that the applicant and the gladiator are not on fixed platforms, but on rotating and shaking structures. Scoring is the same as in "Duel". Duration - 30 seconds or until someone else wins.

Skytrak - A figure -eight track is attached to the ceiling. All participants are attached to it upside down. The aim of the applicants is to run a circle in this position, running away from the gladiators. Gladiators start at a small distance and their goal is to catch up with the applicants and click on the button behind them. Scoring is the same as in "Wall" or "Pursuit".

Hit and Run - The applicant runs back and forth along the suspension bridge, and the gladiators try to knock him down with four large and heavy balls suspended from the ceiling, pushing them perpendicular to the applicant’s movement. Each successful pass gives the applicant 2 points. Duration - 60 seconds or until the applicant falls from the bridge.

Powerball - The challenger must throw the ball into one of the baskets located on the field. The gladiator has the right to stop the applicant and knock his ball out according to the rules of American football. The gladiator has the right to attack the applicant only when he has the ball. Having lost the ball or having thrown it, the player must run to the other end of the field to take another ball there. In this competition, the candidate received 2 points for a ball thrown into one of the four corner baskets. In addition, there was a central basket, a goal in which cost 3 points. Three gladiators opposed two candidates at once. The task of the third was to defend the middle basket from both applicants at once. Duration - 60 seconds. Interestingly, this is one of two competitions in which applicants managed to exceed the milestone of 10 points. The series record was set in the final for men - 16 points.

Swingshot - Applicants with the help of taut ropes had to jump off the platform, and, pushing off the floor, fly to the center of the field, where there was a stick suspended from the ceiling. Small yellow, red and blue balls stuck to the stick, standing respectively 1, 2 and 3 points. Having seized the maximum number of balls, the applicants had to return to the platform and put them in the basket. The most expensive balls were higher on a stick. The task of the gladiators was to jump with the applicant at the same time and prevent him from tearing balls from a stick. In this competition, the maximum number of points for all competitions was scored - 17 (third men's quarterfinal).

Eliminator - The last final competition of each show in which gladiators did not participate. Points scored in all previous contests by applicants were summed up and there was a difference. This difference gave an advantage to the leading applicant in the form of an earlier start. Each point of the difference was transformed into 0.5 seconds of advantage at the start. The Eliminator itself was an obstacle course, only much heavier than the Pursuit. The one who finished first was declared the winner of the entire game.
