History
The abbey was founded in 1219 by Cistercian monks from Kinloss Abbey in Morea, on lands granted by William Comin, Earl of Buchan. It is believed that Dir Abbey was built on the ruins of a more ancient monastery, founded six centuries earlier by St. Drostan, a student and follower of St. Columbus . In the X century. within the walls of this monastery was created the Deer Book - the gospel written in Latin , Old Irish and Gaelic , the oldest surviving specimen of Gaelic literature in Scotland.
