The steam locomotives were created by a team of designers led by George Jackson Churchward and Charles Collett based on the design of the GWR 3100 steam locomotive.
Of the 209 steam locomotives built, 10 were saved, of which 7 were saved after being sent for scrap to Woodham Brothers . Of the salvaged locomotives, one is operated at the Great Western Railway, two are awaiting restoration work at the Tyseley Locomotive Works , one each is awaiting repairs at the Barry Island Railway , Didcot Railway Center , Severn Valley Railway ; under one are at the disposal of the West Somerset Railway , Severn Valley Railway, Llangollen Railway .
