The free city of Danzig ( fr. Ville libre de Dantzig , German: Freie Stadt Danzig , Polish. Wolne Miasto Gdańsk ), or the Republic of Danzig, is a semi-autonomous state founded by Napoleon on July 21, 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars after it was captured on May 27 by Marshal Lefebvre in that same year .

The territory of the city-state consisted of the city of Danzig with its rural possessions at the mouth of the Vistula , together with the Khel Spit . The southern half of the Vistula spit was separated from the Kingdom of Prussia .
On November 29, 1813, Russian troops besieged the city , which the French left on January 2, 1814 . According to the decisions of the Vienna Congress , Danzig was returned to Prussia, after which it became the capital of the region and province of West Prussia , while traditional autonomy was preserved.
