Giovanni Santi was born in the city of Urbino . For some time he was quite successfully engaged in entrepreneurial activity, after he studied drawing with Piero della Francesca . There is also speculation that Giovanni was an assistant and friend of another famous artist, Melozzo da Forlì . Giovanni later became a court painter at the Duke of Urbino Federigo da Montefeltro and a kind of Minister of Education for his heir Guidobaldo . He created several altar paintings currently stored in the Berlin Museum, the London National Gallery , the Museum of Fine Arts of Budapest and other museums.
