Biography
Born in Edmonton ( Alberta ), in a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Harry Hiller and Rose Garfin, who settled in Canada in 1912 after several years of living in New York [1] . He had older sisters Dora and Gold. Upon arrival in Edmonton, his father opened a men's hairdresser, then shops for men's clothing and used musical instruments. The family spoke Yiddish , the children attended school with instruction in this language, and the parents of the future director subsidized the opening of the first Jewish theater in the city, in which by the age of eleven he began to play episodic roles [2] [3] .
He graduated from University College of Toronto with a bachelor of arts degree . In 1950 he received the title of Master of Arts , and in 1995 he became an Honorary Doctor of Law .
Career
He began his career in the 1950s on the CBC Toronto Channel. There, he became a successful television director and proceeded to creating feature films in Hollywood .
From 1989 to 1993, he was president of the Directors Guild of America , and from 1993 to 1997, he was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
In 2002, he was honored with a star on the Canadian Gene Hersholt Avenue of Glory and Award . In 2006 received the rank of officer of the Order of Canada .
Personal life
Since 1948, he was married to Gwen Hiller. They had two children and two grandchildren.
