Content

Spread

South America (most species), North America and one genus ( Peltonotus ) are found in Southeast Asia [1] .

Description

Medium-sized beetles (usually 1-2 cm, up to 40 millimeters), often horned, the main color is brown and multi-colored (with red, yellow, brown and black markings), the body is usually smooth and shiny. Males are characterized by enlarged front legs and large claws. Pollinators and pests of both wild and agricultural crops [1] [2] .

Some species are eaten by local peoples: for example, the Lacandon (Chiapas) tribe eat larvae, pupae, and imago beetles Cyclocephala fasciolata . Ecuadorians eat the beetle larvae of Ancognatha castanea Erichson, A. jamesoni Murray, and A. vulgaris Arrow [1] [3] .

Systematics

About 500 species and 14 genera. Evolutionary relationships with close groups remain unclear. Studies have shown phylogenetic affinity for Oryctoderini , as well as for the Anomalini and Rutelini tribes from the Rutelinae subfamily [1] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] .
