5-alpha reductase 1 is a human enzyme encoded by the SRD5A1 gene on chromosome 5 . It is one of the isoforms of 5-alpha reductase . Although SRD5A1 was originally cloned from the prostate , gene expression in prostate tissues is low, predominant in the skin, including the scalp, which makes the enzyme a convenient pharmaceutical target in the treatment of baldness . [1] The first type of enzyme is not found in the fetus during pregnancy, is temporarily expressed in the skin of the newborn, and is stably activated starting from puberty . [2]

Clinical Importance
According to one study, both SRD5A1 and SRD5A2 are associated with polycystic ovary syndrome , but only SRD5A1 affects the severity of hirsutism in women. [3]
