The Ionian Islands for centuries were part of the Venetian Republic , while the Campo-Formiysky world in 1797 did not go to revolutionary France . In 1798-1799, the Russian-Turkish forces drove the French off the islands and formed the Republic of the Seven Islands , which existed from 1800 to 1807. After that, France again annexed the Ionian Islands, and they became part of its Illyrian provinces .
On October 2, 1809, the British defeated the French fleet at Zakynthos and captured the islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Kithira . In 1810, the British occupied Lefkada . Corfu remained under French rule until 1814.
The Congress of Vienna authorized the transfer of the islands under the "friendly protectorate" of Great Britain. Great Britain established a military administration there, and the Austrian Empire guaranteed the islands equal commercial status with Great Britain. On August 26, 1817, the Maitland Constitution was approved, in accordance with which a federation of seven islands was formed, and Sir Thomas Maitland became its first High Commissioner .
On March 29, 1864, Great Britain, Greece, France and Russia signed a treaty in London , after ratifying which the islands were to pass on to Greece. On 28 May, the High Commissioner issued a proclamation on the unification of the Ionian Republic with the Greek Kingdom.
