Story

The main character, Jacob Shtarkah, does not distinguish himself from cockroaches , as they try to survive, leaving numerous offspring, as they suffer from humiliations associated with life. Like them, he also has an incredible life force, which gives him the opportunity to live another day after each disappointment. Of course, unlike cockroaches, he can live in accordance with the fact that his dreams can be realized, and the whole thing is the life force of a person, which makes him go forward and not give up.

As often happens, Eisner divides the story into chapters, in order to improve the ability to insert newspapers in one of the headings that make it possible to understand the historical context and the symbols that were then in the USA in the 30s, the economic crisis due to the collapse of the stock market aggravated by the influx immigrants , including illegal immigrants , “pushing the gates of the country”, arriving in search of work or fleeing intolerance and oppressive governments. Life is very difficult, and none of the poorest or the richest can escape difficulties. Therefore, trying to survive the family of Jacob (Rifk's wife, son Daniel and daughter Rebecca) intersects with other people whose very existence will give fatigue in everyday work.

Thus, amid problems with climate and unemployment, especially with the protests of the trade unions, the protagonist asks himself the question: how is it different from a cockroach? Everyone should find their answer, which will seem more appropriate and possible.
