Gagra Municipality ( Georgian გაგრის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Abkh. Gagra Municipality ; until 2006 - Gagra District ) is an administrative unit in Georgia , formally included in the Abkhaz Autonomous Republic . The administrative center is the city of Gagra .

The total territory of the municipality is 772 km². The distance from Gagra to the Russian border is 25 km, to the city of Sukhumi - 90 km. The Gagra municipality has a length of 53 km on the Black Sea coast.
In fact, the Gagra region of the Republic of Abkhazia is located on the territory of the municipality.

The population of the Gagra City Council in 1989 was 77,079 residents, including 29.7% - Armenians , 28.0% - Georgians , 24.2% - Russians , 9.1% - Abkhazians , 3.8% - Ukrainians , 1.2% are Greeks [1] .
After the victory of the people of Abkhazia in the war of 1992-1993, the population census in the Gagra Municipality was not carried out by the Government of Georgia due to the actual occupation of the territory by the Republic of Abkhazia, a partially recognized state.
Nature
Mountains and hills occupy 80% and lowlands 20% of the territory of the municipality. The main orographic unit is the Gagra Range and its branches. The highest point is Mount Agepsta .
Economy and tourism
The municipality has a high recreational potential. In 1921, Gagra was declared a resort of national importance in the USSR . The collapse of the USSR and the Georgian-Abkhaz war negatively affected the resort industry.
