The construction of the bridge began in 1998 . The cost of the project was initially estimated at 11 million euros, but over time increased to 60 million euros. The assembly of the bridge was carried out in Rotterdam at an enterprise that, for example, was engaged in the manufacture of steel structures of the London Eye . The bridge was moved to Ireland in May 2008 .

The bridge was opened for pedestrians on December 10, 2009 . The ceremony was attended by Lord Mayor of Dublin, Amer Costello, also visited by Becket's relatives, the famous theater and film actor Barry McGovern and the poet Sheimas Heaney .

In the future, a tram is planned to be launched across Samuel Beckett's bridge.
