Jorge Arche received a formal art education at two art academies in Havana (including the San Alejandro Academy, which many major Cuban artists went through, but did not complete it [1] ), but his views were shaped mainly by the influence of artists Victor Manuel Garcia and Aristides Fernandez . In 1935 and 1938, Arce received awards at the first two Salons of painting and sculpture in Havana. In 1937 he executed the fresco in the college for teachers of Santa Clara. In the same year, he held his first solo exhibition at the Havana Lyceum.
Archa gained fame already in the 1930s thanks to his portraits, made in bright colors, under the clear influence of classical painting. He is considered the leading Cuban portrait painter of his generation. In the 1940s, he became acquainted with the Italian and Dutch Renaissance painting, which led him to compositions close to classical painting, often placing the characters of his works in an ideal landscape (which symbolizes his departure from reality).
In 1977, a postage stamp was issued in Cuba in honor of the artist [2] .
Jorge Archa is dedicated to the Canadian poet David William McFadden ’s poem The Death of Greg Curnoe [3] .
