delivermail is a mail program, the ancestor of sendmail , that used the FTP protocol at the dawn of ARPANET to deliver email to recipients.

In 1979, when delivermail was first added to 4.0BSD and 4.1BSD , ARPANET still used NCP as its network protocol . When ARPANET switched to the TCP / IP protocol stack in 1982, the road opened for mail programs that did not rely on the FTP protocol for delivery. SMTP became the new protocol for sending mail, and after DNS supplanted the host list files , delivermail evolved into sendmail , which today is still a widely used mail program on UNIX systems.
