History
The palace was built by the Spanish colonial administration of Chile in 1784 - 1805 by the project of the Italian émigré Joaquin Toeschi in the style of classicism as the building of the mint , which was located in the building in 1814 - 1929 and gave it its name. In 1845, President Manuel Bulnes made it also the residence of the president and the government, and in 1930 , during the reign of Gabriel González Videla, the palace became the official residence of the President of Chile, and before 1958 - the place of his residence. In the same year, the Constitution Square was opened in front of the palace.
On September 11, 1973, the palace where President Salvador Allende was located was partially destroyed during the assault during the military coup , but it was restored by March 11, 1981 , although some traces of bullets were preserved. In addition, by order of Pinochet , a bunker was built under the building.
In 2003, President Ricardo Lagos opened the palace to tourists. In 2006 , the Citizens' Square appeared in front of its southern facade, on which the cultural center of the palace was erected and a monument to President Arturo Alessandri was erected.
