AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Songs is a list of the 100 best songs from American films according to the American Film Institute (AFI) from the AFI 100 Years ... series , prepared by AFI for the centenary of the movie. The list was compiled from a vote of 1,500 critics, historians, and film workers. [1]

AFI released the list on June 22, 2004 in a special three-hour television show on the American television channel CBS . The host of the ceremony was John Travolta , also represented by Paul Simon , Julie Andrews , Art Garfunkel , Celine Dion , Barry Gibb and Barbra Streisand [1] [2] . The broadcast gathered 12.3 million viewers, one of the largest audiences of special issues of the American Film Institute at that time [3] .
The best song from American films was recognized as the song " Over the Rainbow " performed by Judy Garland from the movie " The Wizard of Oz " ( 1939 ). The most featured films on the list were Singing in the Rain , Sound of Music , and West Side Story — three songs from each of these films were selected on the list. Among the performers the most represented were Judy Garland (5 songs), Julie Andrews (4 songs) and Barbra Streisand (4 songs) [4] .
