Bleaching privilege

Peasant Woman on Whitening Van Gogh , 1885

Selection privilege is the privilege to whiten cloth , issued to cities and individuals.

Germany

On December 14, 1357, the German margrave of Meissen, Friedrich III, issued a privilege for the construction of bleaching devices on the banks of the Chemnitz River.

On May 30, 1451, Elector Frederick II renewed and expanded the privilege ( German Chemnitzer Bleichordnung ). Thereby, the export of unbleached fabrics and threads beyond the confinement was prohibited. This privilege led to the rapid growth of the textile industry in the region around the city of Chemnitz .
