History

In the race, the car made its debut at the British Grand Prix, the ninth stage of the 1979 World Cup, to replace the unsuccessful model M28 . The car was built in a single copy and went to John Watson. Having earned a good seventh on the starting grid, Watson has developed success in the race, finishing in fourth place. In the rest of the races of the season, Watson will be able to get into the points 3 more times (two sixths and one fifth place).

In the 1980 season, M29 produced two fourth places (John Watson), fifth (Alain Prost) and two sixths (Prost). At the end of the season, the car was replaced by the McLaren M30 .

In 1981, the team decided to reuse in some races the M29 in a modified version of F. This season, Michelin tires were on the car. M29F participated in five Grand Prix, and Andrea de Cesaris earned one point at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. This race was the only one where de Cesaris was able to get to the finish line on the M29F. This car was the last in the history of the team, which is indicated by the "M" index, later in the course of the season McLaren MP4 / 1 appeared , and to this day race cars with the "MP4" index participate in the championship.

The McLaren M29 was also used in the 1982 British Formula 1 Championship.
