National Accreditation Body for Interpreters and Translators

The national accreditation body for interpreters and translators recognizes four levels of professional excellence in each specialty:

• Paraprofessional Translator (formerly known as Level 2)
• Paraprofessional Interpreter (formerly known as Level 2)
• Professional Translator (formerly known as Level 3)
• Professional Interpreter (formerly known as Level 3)
• Advanced Translator (formerly known as Level 4)
• Conference Interpreter (formerly known as Level 4)
• Advanced Translator (Senior ) (formerly known as Level 5)
• Interpreter-interpreter (Senior) ( Conference Interpreter (Senior) ) (formerly known as level 5)

There is also the category of “ Language Aide Assistants”, which are not translators and that were previously known as Level 1, as well as the Recognition category, which is assigned to the languages ​​in which NAATI is currently does not conduct testing. In the category of “recognition” levels of professional excellence are not distinguished.

The National Interpretation and Translation Accreditation Authority publishes a quarterly newsletter to inform people of what is happening at the NAATI and the Australian community of translators, as well as a number of publications and materials to help translators and interpreters (including the “Directory of Accredited and Recognized Professionals in the Field”). NAATI offices in all states and territories of Australia conduct various seminars for applicants to help them successfully pass accreditation, covering the following topics:

• Introduction to Interpretation
• Ethics and Professional Behavior
• Record keeping
• Fundamentals of interpretation and translation techniques
• Test preparation

NAATI implements a test program upon request. The annual testing program used to be implemented for 12 months, starting in July of each year, with translation tests conducted in November and interpretation tests from March to June. The annual testing program was discontinued on July 1, 2009.

To be admitted to the test, candidates must meet a number of criteria based on the level of testing they are applying for and varying from (Level of Professional Translator):

• having a general education equivalent to at least 4 grades of an Australian high school
• Proof of proficiency in both languages
• at least 3 years of work experience in any field

and prior to having either a general education or higher education in any field and / or accreditation of NAATI as a Paraprofessional Interpreter in the language in which they want to be accredited (Professional Translator levels).

Accreditation at the level of Experienced Translator / Interpreter-simultaneous interpreter and at the level of Experienced Translator (senior) / Interpreter-simultaneous interpreter (senior) is currently not possible through testing.
