In World War I he was the commander of the legendary ship " Ilya Muromets ", made 40 sorties.

He did not accept the October Revolution. When the Eastern Front of the First World War finally collapsed, Colonel Gorshkov, by fate, turned out to be one of the leaders of the Petlyura Ukrainian People’s Republic ( UNR ), and then Hetman Ukraine.

But during the Civil War, he did not forget about his long-given oath of allegiance to God, the king and the Fatherland. Gorshkov actively contributed to the secret transfer of various aviation equipment to the white Volunteer Army of General A. I. Denikin, the recruitment of people into it [1] .

In 1919, the hetman aircraft commander fled from Ukraine, with the goal of reaching the places of stay of units of the Denikin army. However, he was arrested by the Odessa Cheka and shot in Moscow on August 23, 1919 [2] .
