The Bank of France ( fr. Banque de France ) is the central bank of France . It is a member of the European System of Central Banks . The bank is headquartered in Paris .

History

  • 1800 - By decree of Napoleon Bonaparte , the Bank of France was established
  • 1808 - 1936 - Tickets of the Bank of France became legal tender ; branch network expanded
  • 1936 - 1945 - Nationalization of the Bank
  • 1973 - Bank's charter rewritten
  • 1993 - The Bank becomes an independent financial institution whose goal is to ensure price stability in a country independent of government policy.
  • 1998 - The Bank becomes a member of the European system of central banks.

Activity

The Bank of France performs three main tasks in accordance with the law and the rights delegated to it by the ECB on the principle of subsidiarity :

  • maintaining monetary stability
  • maintaining financial stability
  • provision of banking services to government agencies , legal entities and individuals

In accordance with the task of maintaining monetary stability, the Bank of France carries out various activities:

  • establishes the balance of payments of France and represents the economic interests of France in the international community
  • implements the ECB’s tendering policy for banks wishing to raise funds
  • manages part of the ECB’s foreign reserves
  • issues money and manages them

In accordance with the task of maintaining financial stability, the Bank of France performs the following functions:

  • control over the activities of the Committee of Credit Institutions and Investment Companies and the Bank Commission
  • financial management
  • management of the payment system (including the joint management of the TARGET2 system)

The Bank of France manages and maintains records of the activities of the treasury and certain state enterprises .

The Bank of France collects financial information about companies and provides it to other companies. In 2007, the Bank received the right to make an independent assessment of the creditworthiness of a legal entity.

For individuals, the Bank of France keeps records of payment incidents :

  • national list of lost or stolen checks
  • central list of incidents involving illegal financial transactions
  • national list of incidents involving non - payment of loans by individuals
