The early years

Shuk's father was a miner, went through the First World War , having survived the horrors of which, during his son’s growing up, he always advised him by any means to avoid serving in the Wehrmacht infantry. The consequence of this influence, as well as the lack of other employment places, on November 3, 1937, Walter Schuck, at the age of 17, voluntarily entered the service in the Luftwaffe.

World War II

Polar Front

In the fall of 1940, after completing flight training, Non-Commissioned Officer Schuck was assigned to JG 3 . Since April 1941 he served in the combat training 1st Squadron JG 3 , on the basis of which in January 1942 the 7. / JG 5 was formed. He won his first air victory on May 15, 1942 . Flying on the Polar Front by April 1943, Walter had in his account 54 shot down aircraft of the USSR Air Force . A year later, in April 1944 , the German ace was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross . At this point, the assets of Shuk had 84 air victories.

On June 15, 1944, Walter won his hundredth victory, all in all, on that day, he sent 6 enemy aircraft to the ground. 2 days later, Shuk achieved an impressive result - in a day he shot down 12 planes at once. More JG 5 pilots did not have more victories in one day.

In August, the ace was appointed commander of the 10th squadron JG 5. This promotion was not given to Walter easily - the discipline in the squadron deteriorated so much that the commander of JG 5 Heinrich Erler was forced to seriously talk with Schuck, after which the military discipline in the unit returned to its proper course .

A few days after declaring his 171st air victory, Shuk was wounded by shattered glass that seriously damaged his face. One of the fragments cut through Walter's cheek, penetrated the jaw and stuck in one of the ace's teeth. The wound was so serious that several operations had to be done to remove the glass at once - Shuk had to go to the hospital. Already after the ace recovered from operations, a notification came of the rewarding of Walter with Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross

In total, Walter Schuck won 198 air victories on the Eastern Front.

Me-262

In March 1945, Lieutenant Schuck was transferred to JG 7 , at the personal request of Theodor Weissenberger, the commander of this squadron. The unit flew Me-262 fighter jets used to combat the Mosquito British high-speed fighter jets. He made his first flight on Me-262 on March 20 , and on the 24th, there was a debut of Shuk on this fighter.

After the death of the commander of the 3rd Squadron, Hans Waldmann , Theodor Weissenberger on March 26 appointed Walter Schuck to this post.

At the end of April 1945 Me-262 Shuka during a sortie was shot down by American fighters, and he was forced to leave it with a parachute.
