Biography
Born in the family of a wealthy latifundist, cattleman and politician Domingo Bordberry.
He began political activity in the National Party (Blanco) , then in 1969 he joined the Colorado party . Since 1962, the senator, since 1964, the head of the organization of agricultural producers - the Federal League of Agrarian Actions. From 1969 to 1971 he was Minister of Agriculture in the government of Jorge Pacheco .
In 1971, he was elected president of the Colorado party . After the election, it turned out that he won due to significant fraud. He came to power in 1972 during a political crisis caused by the authoritarian rule of Pacheco and the terrorist threat. As president, he suspended civil liberties, banned trade unions and organized reprisals against the opposition, and also appointed officers to leading posts in the government. In 1973, Bordberry entered into a conspiracy with the military and, on June 27, 1973, de facto carried out a coup d'etat, dissolving Congress and suspending the constitution.
He pursued a policy of repression against left-wing and liberal organizations, as a result of which 10% of the population left the country. According to official figures, during the reign of the dictator, about 200 Uruguayans died. Some of these killings were committed in neighboring Argentina in accordance with the Condor plan , aimed at the defeat of left-wing political organizations.
His rule prepared the establishment of a direct military junta, when in 1976 the military removed him from the government.
In November 2006 he was arrested on charges of human rights violations and the organization of political killings and placed under house arrest due to his state of health.
In February 2010, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for crimes related to the violation of the constitution, as well as disappearances and murders committed during his administration [1] .
He died on July 17, 2011 in his house in Montevideo, where he was under house arrest, serving a sentence by a court sentence. [2]
