Ferula moschata ( H. Reinsch ) Koso-Pol. , 1925

It grows in Central Asia ( Turkestan ridge , Zeravshan , Gissar ridge ) along rocky slopes. Endemic .

The roots contain 2-4% of essential oil with a fragrant musky odor. Dried roots have a bitter-spicy taste.

It is used for flavoring confectionery , in canning , as well as in perfumery .

Botanical Description

The stems are several, thin, about 50 cm high, in the upper part of the corymbose branching. The root is thick, many-headed.

The leaves are harsh, slightly pubescent below; basal leaves are oval-triangular, with long petioles articulated with a plate, a leaf plate three times pinnately dissected, 20-30 mm long, 10-15 mm wide; stem leaves with a simplified plate; upper - narrow lanceolate vaginas .

Umbrellas are different. Central - 6-10-ray, 4-6 cm wide; lateral solitary or sit in two. Umbrellas 10-15 - flower ; notched cup ; petals yellow, 0.7 mm long, oblong-oval.

Semi-fruit 7 mm long, flat-squeezed, 2 times longer than the stalk; filamentous ribs.
