Benzylpiperazine ( 1-benzylpiperazine , N-benzylpiperazine , BZP ) is a chemical compound derived from piperazine . It has a psychostimulant effect similar to that of amphetamine , but less pronounced. It is often a component of tablets sold under the guise of " Ecstasy ".

Mechanism of Action
Like amphetamine, benzylpiperazine acts on dopamine transporters, causing the release of dopamine from the cytoplasm into the synaptic cleft . In large doses, benzylpiperazine also leads to the release of serotonin , but this effect is weak.
Legal Status
In Russia, it is included in the List II list of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors to be controlled.
