Qualifying Tournament

     Qualified for the final tournament      Could not qualify

Of the 54 teams, 23 teams went to the final part, who joined the hostess of the tournament - the French team .

The draw baskets for the draw were created at the end of the selection for the 2014 World Cup, and the draw for the qualification stage took place on February 23, 2014 in Nice. UEFA has made several decisions before qualifying:

  • the teams of Armenia and Azerbaijan could not get into one group for political reasons (both teams refused to play against each other in the selection for Euro 2008)
  • the teams of Spain and Gibraltar also could not get into one group.

The format of the qualifying stage was a system of 8 groups of 6 teams and 1 group of 5 teams. Winners and second-place teams got to the European Championship directly. Also, the best team among third places should have been directly hit. The remaining 8 third teams were to play in butt games for the remaining four tickets. The draw for the qualification stage of the European Championship 2016 was held on February 23, 2014 in the French city of Nice.

In order to increase the number of teams from 16 to 24, in the final tournament, it was decided to add 2 additional groups of 4 teams and another stage of the playoffs (1/8 finals). The teams that won first and second places in the groups, as well as the four best teams that took third places (teams leaving third place are determined by the number of points scored in the group) go to the playoffs. Additional indicators for the equality of points for 2 or more teams (Article 18.01 of the Rules of Procedure for the European Championship 2016):

  a.  The result of the games among themselves is points;
      b.  The result of the games among themselves is the difference in goals;
      c.  The result of the games among themselves is the number of goals scored;
      d. If after applying the criteria from a) to c) the teams still have equal indicators,
      then to determine the final tournament position criteria from a) to c)
      reapplied exclusively to matches involving these teams.
      If this procedure also does not allow a final decision, then criteria from e) to h) are used:
      e.  Total goal difference;
      f.  The number of goals scored in all games;
      g.  Fair play as described in Annex C.5.1;
      h.  UEFA National Team Rankings
  (Article 18.02):
      If two teams with the same number of points scored and conceded goals play the last match in the group
      against each other, and these figures are equal at the end of the match, the best of these two teams is determined in the penalty shootout
      provided that no other teams in the group have the same number of points.
      If more than two teams in a group have the same number of points, then the criteria of Article 18.01 apply.

Regulation of the European Football Championship for the table of the third teams.

  Identification of the four best teams among third teams
   (Article 18.03):
      a.  More points;
      b.  The best goal difference;
      c.  The number of goals scored;
