Biography

Welsh was born on September 27, 1958 in Lita , a port suburb of Edinburgh . At the age of four, he moved with his parents to Edinburgh, where after school he graduated from the specialty “electrician”. He worked as an apprentice technician on television, but after an electric shock was forced to change jobs. In 1978, twenty-year-old Welsh went to London, where he played the guitar and sang in the punk bands The Pubic Lice and Stairway 13. After a series of arrests for minor disturbances in public order and conditional imprisonment for an act of vandalism, Welsh decided to change his lifestyle. He got a job at the Hackney District Administration and studied programming. In the mid-1980s, during the construction boom in North London, Welch was a real estate agent, preparing houses for sale. He soon returned to Edinburgh, where he received a computer science degree from Heriot Watt University .

In the early 1990s, Welch began writing. His first novel, “On the Needle” (1993), is a black humorous narrative about the everyday life of Edinburgh's young drug addicts in the late 1980s. This is pretty much an autobiographical book. He spent his youth among drug addicts and became the only one among his company who survived the AIDS epidemic . In 1996, Denny Boyle made the film of the same name based on the novel. The soundtrack to the tape, which included the compositions of the Primal Scream group, became popular.

After that, Welch wrote a number of books, becoming one of the most popular writers in the counterculture genre. The popularity of Welsh's work in Russia and the West is largely due to descriptions of drug use. , but the focus of his works, both artistic and documentary, is a description of the life of Scotland since the 1960s. This area includes consideration of the problems of this generation: housing reforms, unemployment, low-paid work, drug addiction. Other topics covered include slang, dialect, local traditions, rave, football hooliganism, sex, suppressed homosexuality, class differences, emigration.

The second novel by Irwin Welsh “The Marabou Stork’s Nightmares” ( English Marabou Stork Nightmares , 1995) secured him the fame of a talented writer. He has withstood five editions (by 2004) and has been translated into several languages of the world. In 1996, the Acid House short story collection was published, based on three stories from which the picture of the same name was shot ( English The Acid House , 1998). In 1996, the Ecstasy compilation was published, which included three short stories on chemical drugs. Since then Welsh is called [ who? ] "Singer of the chemical generation." In 2002, Welch published a peculiar continuation of “On the Needle” - the novel “Porn”. From time to time, Welch writes articles for The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian .
