Education
Until 1994, 11 kindergartens worked in Nikel - for 2,000 children. In the late 90s. There is a tendency to reduce pre-school institutions: 8 kindergartens were closed. The reason was the low birth rate and the outflow of the city’s population to other regions of the country in the early 1990s and, as a result, a small number of pre-school children. Until the beginning of 2012, there were only 3 kindergartens in Nikel.
However, in recent years an increase in fertility has been observed in Nikel. This led to the fact that formed the queue, which amounted to more than 200 children. The administration decided to restore the former kindergarten number 12 with 140 places. In 2010, a major overhaul project for the building was developed, in 2011, the kindergarten was repaired, put into operation on January 17, 2012. The money for the reconstruction - more than 30 million rubles - is the total contribution of the budgets of the municipality, the region and the city-forming enterprise - the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company . Repair done in just a year (a little more than 10 months). The speed and quality of work was also influenced by the fact that the city-forming enterprise, Kola MMC , had a great help to the municipality in the reconstruction of the kindergarten.
Until July 2011, there were 4 secondary schools in Nikel - № 1, № 2, № 3 and № 20 (for 3,700 places). In 2011, there was a tendency to reduce educational institutions: in July 2011, School No. 2 was closed. The reason was the low birth rate and the outflow of the city’s population to other regions of the country in the early 1990s and, as a result, a small number of students. Back in the late 1980s, all Nickel schools worked in two shifts, but now schools work in one shift. All grades 10-11 are now continuing their education on the basis of School No. 3 (“Resource Center”). Schools No. 1 and No. 20 continued to work in the status of main secondary schools (incomplete secondary).
At the beginning of the 2012 school year, there are 7 educational institutions operating in Nikel, including: 4 pre-school institutions and 3 general education institutions . Also in Nikel there is a music school, an art school, a sports school, an interscholastic training complex, the House of Children's Art, an Interscholastic Training and Production Complex (formerly UPC ) and the Pechenga Polytechnic College.

Paradise place. But do you see these tall pipes beyond the hill in the east? This is Nickel. City of miners. Life expectancy there is very short. Residents are poor even by Soviet standards. - Why is there a short life expectancy? - Due to respiratory tract infection. And it comes from emissions from all the factories and plants that work in the city. Look at the smoke that comes from these pipes. There is a large factory in the suburbs. "Norilsk Nickel".
