The Department of Mathematics and Mechanics was opened in the newly created Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR in 1944. Later, the department was transformed into the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. The first director of the institute was a mathematician, academician Artashes Shaginyan , known for his research in the field of complex analysis .

The Institute of Mathematics was separated into a separate organization in 1971. The post of director of the institute was held by academician Mkhitar Jrbashyan (1971-1989, honorary director in 1989-1994), academician Norayr Arakelyan (1989-1991, 1997-2006) academician Alexander Talalyan (1991-1997). Academicians Sergey Mergelyan , Rafael Alexandrian , Ruben Hambartsumyan (solved the “fourth Hilbert problem” ) and Henri Nersesyan had a great influence on the research work of the institute.
In the first years of work, the institute was mainly concerned with the theory of functions. Over time, the scope of research has expanded and now includes differential and integral calculus, functional analysis, probability theory, integral geometry and mathematical statistics.
At present, the Institute has 25 permanent researchers, as well as part-time researchers from Yerevan State University.
