History
The MP4 / 13 was the first McLaren car, completely built under the auspices of Adrian Newey. In 1998, the FIA changed the technical regulations, the width of the car had to be reduced to 1,800 mm instead of 2,000 mm last year. New rules always give a chance to catch up with the leaders and McLaren did not miss this chance. In the McLaren did not reduce the wheelbase , preferring to leave it at the level of last year.
At the start of the season, the advantage of MP4 / 13 was so great that in the first race of the season, McLaren pilots won more terms than their pursuers at the finish line. However, then Michael Schumacher joined the Ferrari F300 in the struggle for victories in the Grand Prix.
Ferrari and later Benetton and Williams protested against the McLaren braking system with a separate drive to adjust the distribution of braking force to the Brazilian Grand Prix . In the cockpit, they installed a second brake pedal chosen by the driver to act on one of the rear wheels. This allowed riders to struggle with understeer and slippage of the drive wheels at the exit of slow corners. As competitors believed that this was contrary to the rules of the FIA, which, by the way, gave the green light to this system before the start of the championship. Ferrari and Williams stated that this system is based on all-wheel drive , which was prohibited by article 10.4.1 of F1 technical regulation.
At the same time, it became clear that McLaren used the braking energy to generate it into electricity, which was stored in batteries. It helped, for a short time, to increase the engine power by 30-40 hp . It is worth noting that the use of such a system was not officially prohibited by the regulations of the FIA. However, the entire system was banned.
The fate of the title was decided in the last race of the season, in Japanese Suzuka . Michael went down because of a burst tire, and Hakkinen won the 8th win of the season, bringing the team world title for the first time since 1991 .
The 1998 season was the most successful for McLaren, since 1989 , when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost played for it.
Autosport magazine recognized McLaren MP4 / 13 as the “Racecar of the Year 1998”.
