The presidential election was held in Romania on May 20, 1990 , becoming the first election after the overthrow of Nicolae Ceausescu and the formation of the National Salvation Front , which took power into its own hands. The president was elected for 2 years.
As a result of the election, the chairman of the National Salvation Front, which was transformed after the election into a political party, Ion Iliescu was elected president by a huge margin, receiving more than 85% of the vote in the first round. His main rival, the leader of the restored National Liberal Party , which had great weight before the Communists came to power in 1947 , Radu Campeanu gained a little more than 10%.
