The organizers of the marathon are the (fin.) And the (fin.) .

As a rule, Russia ranks second in terms of the number of participants after Finland itself [2] .

To date (2015), Finlandia-hiihto distances are:

  • Classic style: 50 km and 32 km;
  • Free style: 50 km, 20 km and 20 km for juniors.

The logo of the marathon is a teddy bear skiing. In the first races there were few participants from central Europe, since Finland was considered an exotic country and Europeans seriously feared polar bears. Realizing this situation, the organizers added insurance against bear attacks, and this story served as the theme for creating the logo [3] .

History [4]

  • in 1973, the marathon was founded by Risto Rytökoski, but could not be held that year due to lack of snow.
  • The first marathon was held in 1974. The route passed from Hämeenlinna to Lahti at a 75-kilometer distance. The first Finlandia-hiihto was attended by over 1,000 skiers.
  • in 1975, and also later in 1977, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2014, the race route changed and decreased due to weather conditions [5] .
  • Since 1978, Finlandia-hiihto has been a member of Worldloppet, an international ski marathon organization.
  • in 1981, the race was first won by a foreigner - Swede Matti Kuosku
  • in 1982, the prince of Japan Tomohito took part in the marathon
  • In 1984, Finlandia-hiihto hosted the world's largest mass international ski competition, in which 13,226 skiers took part.
  • in 1985, the leaders first ran the race in the skate style and smashed the track to all the other participants. For this reason, in the following year (1986) the number of participants decreased — few people wanted to ride the virgin lands in a classic style [6] . Skating and classic styles were simultaneously allowed until 1988, then the race became only classic until 2006, and then again began to be held in both classic and skating styles, but on different days.
  • since 2001, due to frequent adjustments to the route due to lack of snow, Finlandia-hiihto began to carry out the Lahti-Hollola-Lahti route.
  • In 2009, for the first time in Finlandia-hiihto, a 20 km freeway route was organized for women and youth under 16 years of age.
