Altmark ( German: Altmark - Old Mark) is a region in the north of Saxony-Anhalt . The historical region extends from Draven in the west to the Elbe in the east, bordered in the south by the fertile Magdeburg Plain , and in the north by Wendland . The name of the area was first mentioned in 1304 as Antiqua Marchia , the “old marchia ” and refers to the original territory of the Brandenburg brand on the west bank of the Elbe. Altmark is considered the cradle of Brandenburg and Prussia . Altmark was entirely a part of the Brandenburg brand from the moment of its foundation, and then the Prussian state formed on the basis of Brandenburg. The modern Altmark is administratively divided into the Salzwedel and Stendal districts .
