Story

Pavel Vasilyevich, a famous writer, was in anticipation of the desired holiday in the country. But to his displeasure, the departure was unexpectedly delayed by the appearance of a strange lady, introduced by his acquaintance Murashkina.

Murashkina enters the room and tearfully implores Pavel Vasilyevich to give her half an hour, then to express her opinion about the new drama she wrote “What did the nightingales sing?”.

The boring reading went on for so long that the distraught writer shouted, “Knit me,” the hapless chantice hit a heavy paperweight.

A jury acquitted him.

About the film

Faina Ranevskaya, the performer of the role of Murashkina, pronounces three times more text than is written by the author. She wrote this additional text-styling for a scholarly essay herself. Alexander Belinsky wrote about this production and the role of Ranevskaya in it:

Faina Georgievna “added” Chekhov, or rather, the very grafomanskaya essay by the foolish Murashkina. Having put "Drama" together with her regular partner Osip Naumovich Abdulov , she decided to show her audacious experience of Knipper-Chekhova herself. Olga Leonardovna tenderly treated all that concerns the distortion of the text of Anton Pavlovich, and led to the viewing of Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov . And now, in front of these two great spectators, in trepidation, Ranevskaya and Abdulov began to play their own concert number. A minute later, Ranevskaya glanced into the auditorium. She did not see either Knipper or Kachalov. Both fell down from the chairs literally moaning with laughter. [one]
