Early years

Wishaw was born in the village of Clifton, Bedfordshire , in the family of beautician Linda (née Hope) and children's trainer Jose Whishaw [1] [2] . His mother is English, and his father has French, German and Russian roots [1] . He has an non-identical twin brother, James [3] . His paternal grandfather, nee Jean Vladimir Shtelmaher, was a British spy in the German army, and after emigration he changed his name to John Victor Whishaw [4] . He attended Henlow High School and later Samuel Whitbread Community College in Clifton, Bedfordshire.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 2003. First gained fame during his collaboration with the Big Spirit theater troupe .

Career

If before the Perfumer, few people heard about Ben Whishaw in a big movie, then the actor became a theater star at 23, playing the main role in Hamlet [3] . Winner of various theater awards, Premier of the Old Vic Theater.

In 2004, he received very favorable reviews for the role of Hamlet in the production of the Old Wick Theater.

The film “ Perfumer: The Story of a Murderer ” based on the novel of the same name by Patrick Suskind is considered a breakthrough.

Personal life

Wishaw is an openly gay man. For several years, he refused to answer questions about his personal life, saying: “It is important for me to maintain the level of anonymity. As an actor, your job is to convince people that you are someone else. Therefore, if you constantly tell people about yourself, it seems to me that in this way you harm yourself ” [7] . In 2011, he told Out magazine: “As an actor, you have every right to privacy and mystery, no matter what your orientation or what you do. I don’t know why it is necessary to talk about it openly only because you are doing something in front of the public. I don’t understand why we are turning actors into celebrities ” [8] .

In August 2012, Wishaw entered into a civil partnership with Australian composer Mark Bradshaw, whom he met while working on the film " Bright Star " in 2008 [9] [10] . In 2014, he publicly discussed his cuming out, saying that for him it was a tense event, but "everyone was surprisingly nice" [11] .
