The Supreme Council of Defense ( Italian: Il Consiglio Supremo di Difesa ) is the constitutional body of Italy , headed by the President of the Republic (Art. 87 of the Italian Constitution ). Acts in accordance with the Italian Law of July 28, 1950 No. 624, published in the Official Gazette of August 28, 1950, No. 196. In accordance with the law, the Council considers general and technical issues of national defense and issues directives for organizing and coordinating events, related to the field of activity of the council.

Board Meetings
The Supreme Defense Council must convene at least twice a year and is convened by the President of the Republic, as well as at the request of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, when necessary.
Board Functions
Government decisions regarding security and defense policy should be reviewed by the Supreme Council of Defense and approved by the Italian Parliament .
The Council addresses general issues related to national defense. However, the majority of real decision-making powers are de facto in the competence of other bodies. The directions of foreign and military policy are within the competence of the Government, the creation of strategic plans and the defense of borders are the competence of the chief of staff. The council is limited only to advisory functions.
