Description
The area is approximately 756 [3] (820 [1] ) km², the water level and the size of the lake depend significantly on the intensity of inflow from the flowing rivers and weather conditions, increasing during floods and greatly decreasing in the dry season. The average depth of the lake is 7.6 [3] (5 [1] ) m, shallow water is associated with a large amount of sediment brought by the flowing rivers. From the eastern side of the lake flows the Xianheshui River [2] (Yuxi [10] ), through which Chaochu communicates with the Yangtze [1] . There are several islands on the lake, the largest - Laoshan (0.86 km²) [2] .
Ecology
About 5 million people live in the lake area, using it for irrigation, fishing and transport, which in recent years has led to eutrophication and silting of the lake. Due to the rapid economic growth of China, Lake Chaohu is today one of the most polluted lakes in China [10] [3] .
