History
The Barbaro family moved from Rome to Istria , settled in Trieste and finally settled in Venice in 868 . In 968, Antonio Barberigo was appointed procurator of the Venetian district of San Marco . In the 1120s, under the Doge Domenico Mikiel, after participating in naval battles, Marco Barbaro became an admiral.
The Barbaro family belonged to the richest in Venice. It had possessions in Crete , in the area of Verona and Treviso . The family residence was the Palazzo Barbaro on the Grand Canal near the Academy Bridge in the San Marco area.
Doges of Venice, bishops and patriarchs, cardinals and prosecutors, artists and humanists came from the surname of Barbaro. Rod Barbaro died out in the middle of the XIX century.
