"Hetman Sagaidachny" ( Ukrainian "Hetman Sagaidachny" ) is a frigate [1] , named after the hetman Petr Kononovich Konashevich-Sagaidachny , the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy . It was laid as a patrol ship of project 11351 Nereus.

Building and Service History

Laid down (as "Kirov") on October 5, 1990 at the boathouse of the Zaliv shipyard in Kerch, by order of the naval units of the KGB of the USSR . Factory number 208. The chief designer is A.K. Shnyrov . He was the eighth ship of the series. The ship was additionally equipped with active pitching dampers . July 9, 1991 enlisted in the lists of ships of the border troops , launched on March 29, 1992.

In June 1992, in an unfinished state, he transferred to the Ukrainian Navy and was renamed [3] . It was commissioned on April 2, 1993, on July 4, it raised the naval flag of Ukraine. The flag was hoisted by the commander of the ship, Captain 3rd rank V. S. Katushenko. He was reclassified as a frigate in accordance with international standards and initially bore board number "201" before July 1994, then, according to the then adopted Navy standard - U130 and, after the transition to the classification of ships according to the NATO standard - F130. It is noted that the frigate “Getman Sagaidachny” does not meet its class in its tactical characteristics - the ship is actually a modification of Project 1135 without an attack missile system ( Rastrub-B anti-aircraft missile launcher / anti-aircraft missile system is installed on the base project), designed for border guards [6] .

In July 1994, “Getman Sagaidachny” took part in the festival , dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Allied landing [7] [8] . In 1995, he made a business visit to Abu Dhabi ( United Arab Emirates ) at the Aidex-95 weapons exhibition, and in the same year the ship visited the port of Varna (Bulgaria) and La Spezia (Italy). In 1996, he made the first transatlantic campaign at the head of a detachment of ships of the Ukrainian Navy in the United States at the port of Norfolk . At the same time, business visits were made (twice) to the ports of Gibraltar (Great Britain) and to Ponta Delgada (Portugal, the Azores ).

In 1996 he visited Poti , Istanbul and Varna . In June 1999, he made an official visit as part of a squad of ships of the Ukrainian Navy to Israel in the port of Haifa . In 2000-2004 he visited various ports of Turkey and Bulgaria independently and as part of ship groups.

Repeatedly hosted on his board the highest statesmen - the President of Ukraine L.D. Kuchma in 1996, 2000, 2001, the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin in 2000, 2001, the President of Ukraine V.A. Yushchenko in 2005, President of Ukraine V.F. Yanukovych in 2010 (in 2004 as Prime Minister), President of Ukraine P.A. Poroshenko in 2017.

In June-August 2008, the ship took part in Operation Active Endeavors in the Mediterranean Sea, monitoring shipping [9] .

On September 24, 2013, the Getman Sagaidachny frigate, with a Ka-27 helicopter on board and a special task force, sailed from the port of Sevastopol to join NATO ’s Ocean Shield operation to combat piracy at sea [10] [11] [12] . As part of the operation, the Ukrainian frigate took part in joint exercises with the Chinese frigate , during which the tasks of rescuing victims of a pirate attack were completed. During the first patrol in the Gulf of Aden, the Ukrainian military provided first aid to the captain of a foreign ship, and during the second patrol, the frigate Getman Sagaidachny detained a suspicious vessel and carried out its inspection. [13] [14] On January 3, 2014, the operation was completed, and on January 20, Sagaidachny joined the EU operation [15] .

On March 1, 2014, Igor Morozov , a member of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, stated that the ship had crossed over to the Russian side and raised the Andreevsky flag [16] . Messages have been refuted by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine [17] [18] . When the ship passed the Bosphorus Strait, the flags of the Ukrainian Navy and the state flag of Ukraine were hoisted on it [19] . Under the same flags, he arrived in Odessa on March 5 [20] .

Of the 211 people, frigate teams defected 28 people [21] [22] .

In November 2014, Getman Sagaidachny started repair at the Ukraine shipyard of the Odessa Sea Port [23] .

In June 2015, Getman Sagaidachny took part in joint exercises with the USS Ross (DDG-71), an American destroyer, in the waters of the Black Sea [24] .

In September 2015, the frigate took part in the international naval exercises Sea Breeze 2015 . [25]

In December 2015, the Furuno FAR-2117/27 radar was handed over to the frigate team with the volunteer movement . [26]

In March 2016, the frigate and demagnetization vessel Balta arrived from Odessa to Istanbul , where they conducted general tactical exercises with the frigate of the Turkish Navy. [27]

In July 2016, the frigate conducted general maneuvers of the type with the ships participating in the Sea Shield 2016 exercises of the fleets of Bulgaria, Canada, Poland, Romania and Turkey [28] .

In May 2017, the frigate crashed due to engine failure almost immediately after repair work [29] [30] . 91 million hryvnias were allocated for repair and reconstruction work and modernization of the frigate [31] . In 2018, the frigate took part in the exercises [32] .
