Germany at the Olympics

Germany first took part in the Athens Olympics in 1896 . At the Games in Antwerp in 1920 and at the Games in Paris in 1924 , Germany was not allowed due to the organization of the First World War . After World War II, Germany was divided into three separate states. In 1947 , attempts were made to send a single team to the London Olympics, but the Allies opposed this. As a result, none of the German teams participated in the 1948 Games. Finally, in 1949 , the National Olympic Committee was created in western Germany, which covered two German states: Saarland and the Federal Republic of Germany . The protectorate Saar lasted until 1956 , after which it reunited with Germany. The authorities of East Germany formed their National Olympic Committee in 1951 , however, it was adopted by the IOC only in 1965 . At the Games in Melbourne , Rome and Tokyo, Germany was represented by the United German Team . Since 1968 , the GDR began to send an independent team to the Olympics. In 1989 , after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany into a single state, a single German team again began to perform at the Olympic Games.
