Sports career
1985-1991
Manon Bollegraf first took part in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) professional tennis tournament at the age of 21, in November 1985 . Already in January 1986, she won her first tournament of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in San Antonio , paired with compatriot Marie van der Torre . Until the end of the year, she won two more ITF tournaments in singles and doubles and reached the finals of the WTA tournament in Buenos Aires in doubles with another compatriot, Nicole Muns-Jagerman .
Bollegraf had to wait for the next significant success until 1988 . This year, she won her first WTA tournament in Strasbourg , paired with Australian Nicole Brandtke . She also reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open , paired with American Sandy Collins . The following year, she won the only single-player WTA tournament of her career, taking the upper hand over Soviet tennis player Leyla Meskhi in the final of the tournament in Oklahoma . This victory and several exits to the semi-finals and finals of other tournaments allowed her to become one of the thirty strongest tennis players in the world by the summer of 1990 according to the WTA rating . In the doubles category in 1989 and 1990, she won six WTA titles, and in 1990, with Meredith McGrath, she reached the final of the WTA Championship among couples , where they lost to the Soviet pair Natalya Zvereva - Larisa Savchenko . However, Bollegraf achieved the most significant successes during this period with his other compatriot Tom Neissen : they won the 1989 French Open and the 1991 US Open in mixed doubles .
1992-1996
The most notable success of 1992 was for Bollegraf reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open in singles. On her way to the quarter finals, she defeated the tenth and fourteenth racquets of the world. She also won two tournaments in pairs. Having missed the second half of 1992 due to injuries, she spent 1993 paired with American Katrina Adams . Together they win three tournaments, including the first category I tournament in Bollegraf's career. Bollegraf also reached the final of the Grand Slam tournament with Neissen for the third time, but in the final of the Wimbledon tournament they lose to the legendary Martina Navratilova and Mark Woodford , who won the Grand Slam tournament three times a year before in the mixed doubles. At the end of the season, Adams and Bollegraf won the right to participate in the final tournament of the WTA tour .
In 1994, Bollegraf played for the Idaho Sneakers club in the World Team Tennis professional tennis league. [2] Her club lost in the final to a team from New Jersey led by Navratilova. [3] In the same year, she twice won WTA tournaments with Navratilova, including for the second time in a career tournament in Zurich, which at that time was also awarded category I. In total, she won three tournaments in a year, played seven finals in the finals and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon with Navratilova (lost to Natalia Zvereva and Gigi Fernandez , who eventually won their twelfth Grand Slam title in four years), and they lost in the final tournament of the year in the semifinals, Jan Novotnaya and Aranche Sanchez .
1995 was also successful for Bollegraf. She won five doubles tournaments, four of them with American Nicole Arendt , and played four more in the finals, including the second time in the WTA doubles. In the final tournament of the season for the second time in a row in the semifinals, Novotna and Sanchez became her way. The following year, she won only two victories, but one of them in the WTA doubles championship, again with Arendt. Another success was reaching the semi-finals of the Atlanta Olympics . With Brenda Schulz-McCarthy, they defeated Martina Hingis and Patti Schnyder from Switzerland in the quarter-finals, but lost 7–5, 7–6 to future champions Gigi and Mary-Joe Fernandez in the semifinals. The match for third place they lost to the Spaniards Martinez and Sanchez. Bollegraf also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the quarter-finals of the French Open and US Open in women's pairs (all with Arendt) and to the final of the US Open with American doubles master Rick Leech in the mixed doubles.
1997—2000
After 1996, Bollegraf finally focused on playing in pairs. It turned out to be the right decision: in 1997, she won two Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open and US Open) with Rick Lich, and with Arendt she won four tournaments, including the second time in the WTA Championship among couples, and only once in reached the finals of the Grand Slam tournament in women's pairs: in the final of the Wimbledon tournament they lost to Zvereva and Gigi Fernandez, who won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments that year. In the final tournament of the WTA tour, Arendt and Bollegraf again lost in the semifinals, this time to the French Natalie Tozia and Alexandra Fusai . As part of the Netherlands national team, Bollegraf reached the finals of the Federation Cup , where her team was also defeated by the French. These successes led to the fact that at the beginning of 1998 she was on the fourth line of the ranking among tennis players in doubles, the highest in her career.
However, due to an Arendt injury, the duo breaks up, Bollegraf in search of a new partner performed with Novotnaya, tried to play with Katrina Adams again, then because of injuries she missed the first half of the 1999 season , and as a result, their collaboration with Arendt resumed for another year and a half. It was with her that Bollegraf paired for the only time in his career reached the finals of the 2000 WTA final tournament, thus putting a beautiful point in his career.
