The novel was written in Odessa in 1888 , and published in Bulgaria in 1894. Translated into more than 30 languages of the world. In 2009, the novel won the Big Reading campaign in Bulgaria .

Story
The plot of the novel is the defeat of the Mid-Mountain Uprising of 1876 . Vazov managed to paint a vivid picture of the life of Bulgaria in the pre-liberation era; here he depicted both representatives of the revolutionary and evolutionary wing in the national movement, as well as the relationships of various class groups.
