Biography and Creativity
Charles Dzhinnever was born in San Mateo, California , in 1931 . After serving in the Air Force, he traveled around Europe and studied sculpture in Paris from 1953 to 1955 with Osip Tsadkin . In 1957, he received a bachelor’s degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, and in 1959 a master’s degree from Cornell University.
His early works of the 1960s were scrap steel, sometimes in combination with canvases or other unusual materials, and were painted in bright colors. In the following years, Ginnever reduced the use of color and choice of materials, creating works that looked more complex in composition. Geometric shapes, triangles and trapezes, were arranged in such a way that they created optical illusions, challenging the perception of the viewer and the sense of space.
Genenever taught a lot, continuing to participate in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
Ginnever was one of the founders of the ConStruct gallery, which promoted and organized large-scale sculpture exhibitions in the United States. The other founders were John Raymond Henry, Kenneth Snelson , Lyman Kipp and Mark Di Suvero .
