Geography

The surface of the county, despite the steppe and flat character, represented rather significant fluctuations, from 210–200 m in the western margins to 120–150 m in the east and up to 90–105 m in the middle. The greatest difference in relative heights was observed only in the banks of river valleys cut by numerous gullies and ravines; there, they often reached 40 and even 55 m. In the interfluvial spaces, the surface was an almost perfect plain, diversified only by flat, barely noticeable uvels. The territory of the county was cut by several river valleys, which all belonged to the Voronezh river system, which flowed along the western part of the county. Its right bank was high and cut through many deep ravines; the left bank was low, rich in forests, swamps and flying sands. Of the tributaries of Voronezh, the most significant was the Matyra River, which cut through the county almost in the middle. Marshes and lakes lay mainly on the left side of the Voronezh River [2] . The area of the county was equal to 3.35 thousand kmΒ² in 1897 and 5.65 thousand kmΒ² in 1926.
