Lesson served as a surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars on various French warships. In the 1820s, as a ship doctor, he took part in two long-term research expeditions to New Guinea . On these trips, Lesson explored nature, showing particular interest in ornithology . After his return to Paris, he published a report on his trips, where he presented to the public the results of his collecting in four large articles.
From 1832 he returned to service in the French Navy at Rochefort. He outlined his experience as a navy surgeon in 1833 in the Manuel d'Histoire Naturelle Médicale et de Pharmacologie .
