Professional Features

The profession of a carpenter is one of the construction professions. In modern industrial society, carpenters do not manufacture products, but use manufacturing products. Windows, doors and other finished industrial products are delivered to construction sites from highly specialized enterprises.

Even in the last century this was not the case in Russia, many carpenters made their own products.

Currently, carpenters, depending on the category (in Russia, from the 2nd to the 7th category), perform the following work: installation and repair of doors, windows, door locks, window hardware, furniture, door closers, manufacturing and repair of wooden structures (for example storage pallets, formwork), roofs in the construction of buildings and other wood processing. For example, for a carpenter of the 7th category in the Russian Unified Tariff and Qualification Directory of Jobs and Professions of Workers (ETKS RF) it is written [1] :

  • complex carpentry in low-rise cottage construction, as well as in the restoration of wooden architecture monuments and in the construction of unique objects;
  • production and restoration of wooden kokoshniks, platbands, towels and other complex elements according to ready-made samples, drawings and sketches.

Mistakenly Carpenters

“Carpenter” is an incorrect, but well-established translation of the word “tecton” ( Greek. τεκτον , literally “ builder ”), since in Russia houses were built not from adobe , but from logs. In European translations this same word is translated not as a “carpenter”, but as a freemason (literally a mason ), since in Europe houses were built of stone (rather than logs).
